The Anishinaabe are a group of culturally and linguistically related Indigenous peoples primarily located in the northern United States and southern Canada. This dual magnet set depicting a simplified interpretation of woodland flowers is part of the Anishinaabe collection proudly showcased at the DIA.
The Contemporary Anishinaabe Art: A Continuation highlights the ongoing creativity of more than 60 Anishinaabe artists from the Great Lakes region. This major exhibition — the largest of its kind in the Midwest and the first Native American show at the Detroit Institute of Arts in 30 years — redefines how Native American art is seen and understood.
Guided by an advisory council of Ojibwe (Chippewa), Ottawa (Odawa), and Potawatomi (Pottawatomi) artists, the show features over 90 works. These include basketry, beadwork, birchbark, clothing, film, graphic design, jewelry, painting, pottery, sculpture, and woodwork. Together, they showcase the diverse histories and perspectives of the Anishinaabe people. To honor their heritage, gallery labels will also be presented in Anishinaabemowin, the original language of the region.
