Bastet, cat goddess of the home, is one of the most popular gods of ancient Egypt.
She is also known as the goddess of Joy, and watches over families for protection. Cats were first domesticated by the ancient Egyptians for their mouse-hunting abilities. Later venerated as the sacred animal of Bastet, the cat-headed goddess, as she is often depicted, was the daughter of Ra, the sun god, and the protector of mothers.
