Assembling a Black Counter Culture traces the Black American roots of techno and related electronic music through sharp cultural history and critique. Writer and musician DeForrest Brown, Jr revisits Detroit’s 1980s techno scene—from the Belleville Three to Underground Resistance—linking electronic music’s global rise to Black labor, politics, and theory. Drawing on countercultural and Black radical thought, Brown reframes techno’s history from a Black perspective, challenging mainstream narratives and making a powerful case to “make techno Black again.”
