Wolf Kahn’s landscapes glow like living jewels in brilliant, improbable color combinations. A stand of trees might be backed by vivid orange or bright magenta. Dusky purples and blues are intensified. Leaves shimmer chartreuse. Given that Kahn works in nearly violent colors, his paintings are wonderfully tranquil and evocative of real-world hillsides and weathered buildings. Kahn was at the center of a 1950s movement toward the fusion of representational and abstract art. His affinity for this combination and his genius for capturing the immediacy of nature’s hues have brought him to the forefront of the American colorist school. Twelve of Kahn’s striking paintings are presented in this calendar.
