Pieter Bruegel the Elder (Netherlandish, 1525–1569)
The Great Tower of Babel, c. 1563
Pieter Bruegel the Elder, father of the Bruegel dynasty of artists, produced only a few dozen paintings, making works such as The Great Tower of Babel exceptionally rare. The Tower, according to the Book of Genesis, was an enormous tower built in the plain of Shinar, Mespotamia. The story goes that a united humanity of the generations following the Great Flood, speaking a single language and migrating to the east, came to this place to build a city with a tower "with its tops in the heavens.".
