The stone book is an object of American folk art dating back to the mid-nineteenth century. Often embellished with decorative motifs and depicting reverent words or symbols, they came in a range of sizes, and were given as tokens of affection. This large-scale version is carved from heavy blocks of white and gray marble, resulting in tomes that are ideally suited as bookends, door stops, or the grandest of paperweights.
White and grey marble can be seen throughout the interior and exterior architectural features of the Detroit Institute of Arts. In homage to that well-known design element, the DIA Shop has assembled an assortment of gifts in similar patterns.
