The design of this scarf takes a detail from Cotopaxi, Frederic Edwin Church's painting, which is in the collection at the Detroit Institute of Arts.

Church painted Cotopaxi in 1862 after a visit to Ecuador. In it, the viewer is suspended over an abyss, surrounded by smoke and mists, a burning sun, and dramatic effects of light.
