The Guerrilla Girls strive to raise awareness and affect change regarding representation of female artists in fine art museums. In surveying the permanent collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, they found less than five percent of artists in the modern galleries were women.
To publicize their findings, they created a design for a billboard (which was rejected by the Public Art Fund of New York City, the entity that originally commissioned the work). Ultimately the artists rented advertising space on New York City's public buses, bringing notoriety to the group and their cause.
This mug features an updated design, from 2012, based on a newer study.
