Inspired by Martin Edgar Ferrill's "Sleighing Scene", in the collection of the Detroit Institute of Arts, this hand-painted ornament is a one-of-a-kind memento depicting horse-drawn carriages transporting passengers on a snowy day.
The release of this ornament in 2020 marks the fifth year of the collectible ornament series, with each ornament inspired by art in the DIA's collection.
The inaugural ornament, an homage to Fra Angelico's Annunciatory Angel, was revealed in 2016, and is now retired. The second ornament in the series, released in 2017, featured Metcalf's The White Veil and is also retired. The third ornament in the series (now retired), released in 2018, featured Kiitsu’s Reeds and Cranes. The fourth ornament in the series, released in 2019, featured Tedesco’s Winter Scene.
Each ornament is hand-painted on the inside of the glass; each one a unique result of the artist’s hand.
