Description

By Valerie J. Mercer

The Detroit Institute of Arts has organized an exhibition, Detroit Collects: Selections of African American Art from Private Collections which is on view at the Detroit Institute of Arts from November 12, 2019 — March 1, 2020.

This accompanying exhibition catalog explores the rich history of collecting of African American Art in the Detroit region by private collectors, featuring works by Romare Bearden, Al Loving, Charles McGee and Alison Saar. This exhibition will demonstrate local collectors’ interest in the diverse media, styles, genres, influences and subject matter that inspired them to collect art created by African Americans.

With a wonderful foreword by Salvador Salort-Pons, essay by Valerie J. Mercer, this beautiful catalog is as much a story about the collectors as it is about the art they were moved to collect.

About the Authors:

Salvador Salort-Pons, PhD, is the Director, President, and CEO of the Detroit Institute of Arts.

Valerie J. Mercer is the Curator and Department Head of the DIA's GM Center for African American Art.
