Frederick Edwin Church (1826 - 1900) painted Cotopaxi in 1862 after a visit to Ecuador. In it the viewer is suspended over an abyss, surrounded by smoke and mists, a burning sun, and dramatic effects of light. Reproduced from the original oil painting.
