The first dynasty of ancient Egypt dates back to around 3100 B.C.E. The richest and most advanced of early civilizations Egypt had complex belief systems, of which jewelry played an important part.
Lapis lazuli, the “sapphire” of the ancients, was favored for its deep, blue color often flecked with “gold” (iron pyrite). The Egyptians regarded lapis as a sacred stone of celestial origin and a symbol for truth. Regalia made of gold and lapis was believed to place the wearer under the protection of the sun and heaven. Often worn as a protective talisman, lapis was also believed to have strong powers of attraction and the ability to help the wearer gain favors and realize hopes.
